Monschau’s old town in timeless black and white by Rolf Schnepp

Anyone familiar with Monschau will also recognise the distinctive sight of the old town, through which the River Rur winds its way between the closely packed historic houses. It is precisely this combination of water, half-timbered buildings and the slate roofs so typical of Monschau that this photograph captures. The absence of colour lends the scene a subtle, nostalgic feel and draws the eye entirely to the interplay of light and shadow.
The River Rur draws the eye right into the heart of the old town. On the left, the striking façade of the Red House adds a deep, graphic accent, whilst on the opposite side the historic half-timbered houses nestle close to the hillside. Behind them rises the wooded valley of the Eifel – a landscape steeped in tradition which, rendered in shades of grey, reveals a calming character all of its own.
This photograph was taken using a longer exposure time. As a result, the water of the River Rur appears soft and flowing, whilst the houses and their delicate architectural details are rendered clearly and calmly. It is precisely this contrast between the lively, bright river and the enduring, historic façades that defines the picture’s special atmosphere.
For anyone who knows Monschau and associates special memories with the town: a stroll through the old town, a stay in the Eifel or a visit to the River Rur. This image captures not just any historic half-timbered town, but a very characteristic view of Monschau on the River Rur – and thus a timeless slice of the Eifel that you’ll be delighted to take home with you.
