Tras Mill 1779-1802
In 1778 the Amsterdam entrepreneur Adriaan de Boois buys an old defense tower. Adriaan built his mill on the old Goê Vrouwe tower.
On May 19, 1779, the Adriaan is put into operation. Adriaan de Boois grinds tuff into tras for years. Tras is added to the mortar and is used to make the joints in walls waterproof.
Tobacco mill 1802-1865
In 1802 the Adriaan is sold to a tobacco merchant. The mill gets new equipment and tobacco rolls are processed into snuff for years.
Grain mill 1865-1932
In 1865 the mill again changed its owner and its function. The Adriaan is converted into a grain mill. The last owner gave up the business in 1932.
The fire 23 April 1932
On April 23, 1932, it was over. The Adriaan burns down! Hardly anything remains of the mill but a smoldering pile of stones and beams.
Museum mill 2002- ...
On April 23, 2002, seventy years after the fire, the time has finally come. Haarlem has its Adriaan back. A museum windmill that has found a function as a meeting and wedding place. But above all: a working windmill.
Built in 2002, but certainly not a fake. The Adriaan turns and works just as Dutch windmills have turned for centuries.
