Michael Ancher – The Girl with the Sunflowers (with Maren Brems), 1889

by Atelier Liesjes

The young Maren Brems holds a large bouquet of sunflowers, her face radiant and looking directly into the camera — or rather, at the viewer. The sunflowers in the height of the Skagen summer symbolise joy, growth and the richness of the short Danish summer. This work is one of Ancher’s most beloved and recognisable paintings. The combination of a charming young model with the bright yellow sunflowers in the clear Skagen light makes it a timeless summer composition. Michael Ancher (1849–1927) was a Danish realist painter and one of the central figures of the Skagen painters’ community — a group of artists who settled in the fishing village of Skagen on the northern tip of Denmark at the end of the nineteenth century. Ancher was married to the painter Anna Ancher, also a prominent Skagen artist. His work is characterised by a realistic depiction of daily life in Skagen: fishermen, church services, interior scenes and portraits of local residents. The distinctive light of Skagen, where the North Sea and the Baltic Sea meet, plays a central role in his paintings.
