About the artwork

Being bored: what kid doesn't experience that feeling?
Some time ago I read an article that explained the merits of being bored: after feeling dull for a while, eventually kids will come up with ideas, big or small, for things to do. Most of the time, they'll feel the better for it. As do their parents!

I experienced this first hand with my kids. Not giving in to their desire to play "only-one-more-game!" on the i-Pad, was tough sometimes, but it always, always worked out for the better. They came up with all these creative things to do, and we all loved it.

So, this illustration celebrates the merits of boredom. The boy (yes, my son!), hanging in the chair, utterly bored: he's represented in black & white. And then all these exciting, unexpected ideas and thoughts and dreams come into being and grow bigger and bigger, each one even more colorful and fantastical than the other.

The illustration was originally made with pen&ink and watercolor paint. It was digitally adjusted for this print.

This illustration was my first win as a "Chosen Winner" in the annual American Illustration Competition, in the 2019 edition.
