About ‘Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (yellow with the doors open)’ by Dolm

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cars ever built. Its distinctive gull-wing doors, in particular – which, when opened, protrude above the roof like outstretched wings – make a profound impression.

This digital artwork depicts this legendary classic in a style reminiscent of pop art. Some parts appear to have been cut straight out of an advertising brochure, whilst others have been rendered with loose brushstrokes in bold, vibrant colours.

The car pictured is on display at the Cité de l’Automobile in Mulhouse, which bills itself as the world’s largest car museum. The artist was so impressed by this iconic car that he decided to create an artistic interpretation of it. This artwork is the result.

Cars are usually finished in understated colours such as black, white, dark blue or grey. This also applies to the Mercedes-Benz in Mulhouse. However, because the exuberant design and pioneering technology of the 300 SL radiate such a zest for life, the car in this artwork has been given a colourful palette that enhances these qualities.

This image is a playful tribute to timeless car design. With a little imagination, it seems as though the Mercedes-Benz could take flight at any moment thanks to its gull-wing doors. That effect is heightened by the striking contrast between the vibrant car and the tranquil background.

Dolm is the studio of Harry Wibier. Among other things, he likes to be inspired by prehistory. Hence, you sometimes recognise cave drawings or dolmens in his work. At the same time, he seeks the connection with the here and now. Hence his motto: "Ancient magic in modern art."

Harry does not have a set method or way of working. He prefers to experiment. That way, he keeps surprising himself and his audience. He has, however, developed a passion for ink lines…
