With this painting, the two painters commemorated their youngest brother Moses, born in 1645. He was killed in the storming of the English fort Languard near Felixstowe in 1667. Moses had fought in the Dutch navy against the English since 1664. Around him are symbols referring to his military life, time (the watch), death (the skull), eternity (ivy on the rocks) and loyalty (the dogs).
