About the artwork

Meiji Jingu: The Symbolic Wall of Sakevats

This detailed and vivid work captures a culturally rich and iconic Japanese scene found at the Meiji Jingu Shrine in Shibuya, Tokyo. It depicts a wall of stacked sake barrels or 'kazaridaru' wrapped in straw (komo).

These barrels are a decorative wall of offerings given by sake brewers from all over Japan to the gods and deified spirits of the shrine. The barrels are empty and serve as symbolic, spiritual gifts symbolising prosperity and good fortune.

The work highlights the repetitive and symmetrical pattern of the vessels, creating a powerful graphic effect. Each barrel features unique calligraphy representing the brand or brewery. This work is perfect for the lover of Japanese culture, graphic art and unique, detailed patterns.
