Max Pechstein, The Life of a Fisherman, Monterosso, 1951 by Atelier Liesjes

A dynamic watercolour scene of fishing life in Monterosso al Mare (Cinque Terre, Italy): a small, green boat with yellow sails or nets on choppy blue waves, with a standing fisherman holding or hoisting a large yellow net, and another figure in the boat. The sea is rough with undulating, turquoise-blue and green patterns; the background shows dramatic, dark rocks or cliffs in purple-brown, with a bright, undulating sky in yellow-green and blue. The composition is fluid and dynamic, with strong contrasts and a sense of wind and sea; signed "H. M. Pechstein 1951" (or variant).
Meaning This late work from 1951 (Pechstein was 70 at the time) celebrates the fishing life in Monterosso, where he had previously stayed (around 1920-1924) and repeated the theme. The rough sea and the struggle with the net symbolise the eternal struggle and harmony with nature – themes of vitality, primitive power and escape that he had cherished since his Brücke days. After the Second World War and his 'degenerate' period, it radiates hope, perseverance and nostalgia for a simpler life by the sea, with a Mediterranean twist on his Baltic Sea motifs. Technique
Watercolour (possibly with gouache) on paper: transparent, flowing washes for waves and sky, combined with strong contours and bright colours (green, blue, yellow, purple) for dynamism and contrast. Loose brushstrokes give movement and texture; typical of Pechstein's later, lighter style – expressive but harmonious, with a decorative effect and focus on light and the sea atmosphere.

Hermann Max Pechstein (Zwickau, 31 December 1881 – Berlin, 29 June 1955) was a painter from Germany. Pechstein is considered an important representative of Expressionism. In 1918, after the First World War, Pechstein co-founded the Arbeitsrat für Kunst (Workers' Council for Art) and in 1922 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts.
