Max Pechstein, Still life of flowers with green blanket, 1927

by Atelier Liesjes

A rich and rhythmic still life in which Pechstein depicts a vase of flowers on a decoratively draped table - an image of domestic tranquillity, ornament and painterly vitality.

🎨 What you see
A vase of round, textural flowers takes centre stage on a green-and-blue decorated tablecloth with wavy patterns.

The background shows a wall with stylised motifs, including red ornaments and animal figures - possibly squirrels or fantasy shapes.

The colours are warm and contrasting: earth tones, turquoise, red and cream alternate.

The brushwork is visible and rhythmic, with an emphasis on texture and colour harmony.

🧩 Theme
Pechstein here elevates the everyday into visual celebration, in which flowers and textiles combine to form an image of decorative abundance and inner peace.

The work exudes an atmosphere of intimacy and contemplation, in which the interior becomes a mirror of emotion and rhythm.

The flowers are not a botanical study, but symbols of colour, form and life.

📍 Style and technique
Typical of Pechstein's interwar period: decorative approach, expressive areas of colour, and a preference for ornamentation and domestic motifs.

The composition is central and balanced, with the vase as a visual anchor point.

The brushwork is lively but controlled, with a dialogue between figuration and pattern - an image of visual tranquillity and ornamental power.
