Max Pechstein, Head of a Sailor (Fisherman's Head), 1922

by Atelier Liesjes

A powerful, frontal close-up portrait of a sailor or fisherman in woodcut style: an older man with deep furrows in his face, heavy eyebrows, large staring eyes, full beard and moustache, and a cap or hat. The face fills almost the entire surface, with a mask-like, angular expression – eyes half-closed, mouth tight, nose prominent. The composition is asymmetrical with rough, thick black lines and areas suggesting volume and texture; signed ' "HMP" of "H. Pechstein" ' and dated 1922. High contrast black on white, with an intense, stoic gaze. Meaning This work from 1922 belongs to Pechstein's series ' "Fischerköpfe" ' (fishermen's heads), created during his stays on the Baltic Sea (e.g. Leba or Rowe). The sailor symbolises raw, lived wisdom, stoicism and the hard struggle of coastal life – a celebration of authentic humanity and primitive strength after the First World War. The mask-like forms and intense expression show influences from African/Oceanic art and Brücke primitivism, with a melancholic but powerful tone that celebrates the folk as a counterweight to modern chaos. Technique Woodcut: rough, expressive cuts in the woodblock for thick black lines and areas, with high contrast and minimal details. The style is angular and primitive, with a focus on emotional impact over realism – typical of Pechstein's graphic work in the 1920s, inspired by the Brücke tradition of direct, raw expression.

Hermann Max Pechstein (Zwickau, 31 December 1881 – Berlin, 29 June 1955) was a painter from Germany. Pechstein is considered an important representative of Expressionism. In 1918, after the First World War, Pechstein co-founded the Arbeitsrat für Kunst (Workers' Council for Art) and in 1922 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts.
