Maurice Utrillo, Moulin de la Galette in Montmartre by Atelier Liesjes

A hushed and melancholic cityscape in which Utrillo depicts the iconic Montmartre windmill complex in a winter setting - an image of historical presence, visual silence and poetic stillness.

🎨 What you see
At the centre is the dark windmill, covered with snow on roof and sails, surrounded by bare trees and snow-covered buildings.

In the foreground, a snow path with some walkers, flanked by walls and fences.

The sky is pale and covered, giving the scene a subdued, winter atmosphere.

The brushwork is expressive and atmospheric, with a subtle balance between warm earth tones and cool snow colours.

🧩 Theme
Utrillo here depicts Montmartre as a place of remembrance and stillness - the mill as a visual beacon in a frozen landscape.

The winter setting enhances the sense of timelessness and contemplation, in which the everyday is elevated to a monument.

This work is a nostalgic tribute to old Paris, in which the mill acts as a symbol of popular culture and urban identity.

📍 Style and technique
Typical of Utrillo's middle period: sober colours, monumental architecture and a preference for symbolic cityscapes.

The brushwork is rhythmic and tactile, with an almost graphic approach to form and shadow.

The composition is centred and balanced, with the mill as the visual centrepiece - an image of orientation and cultural resonance.

Maurice Utrillo (26 December 1883 - 5 November 1955) was a painter from France, born in Paris, lived in Montmartre and died in Dax. The artist worked mainly with Sober colours: Many greys, whites, ochres and browns - often with melancholic undertones. Furthermore, he worked with simplified forms: No theatrical perspectives or dramatic lighting, but a quiet, almost naive approach. His style was Post-impressionist.
