The bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a deciduous coniferous tree, naturally occurring in southeastern North America. Nowadays it is classified in the cypress family (Cupressaceae). In the Benelux it can often be found in parks and as a street tree.

The marsh cypress, together with some other species, is the exception to the rule that conifers do not lose their leaves (needles) annually. The best-known exception is the larches (Larix). The water cypress (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) also loses its needles in winter.

The marsh cypress forms (at a later age; but not always) respiratory roots.
