Why this species of butterfly is called "Landmark" is immediately understood when you look at the complex pattern on its wings. This specimen was sitting quietly on a leaf because it was cold and raining a bit; not ideal conditions for a butterfly.
Take a closer look at the wings and you can see that the wing surface is completely covered with scales, superimposed like roof tiles and giving the butterfly its color.
Also note the rolling tongue, which you can see coiled up under the head.
The dark area at the top of the wing is actually not a dark area, but a bite from the upper left wing.... So this butterfly may have narrowly escaped the greedy beak of a bird.
