About the artwork

The Monastery of Our Lady is a monastery complex in Magdeburg's old town. The ensemble of buildings is one of the most important Romanesque complexes in Germany. Today, the buildings are used as the municipal art museum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen and concert hall.
Since 2006, the museum has been accessible to visitors from all sides through a circular path. Inside, the cloister, the unique tonsure, the elegantly vaulted basilica and other rooms invite visitors to contemplate and linger.

The building of the art museum Kloster Unser Lieben Frauen is one of the "pearls" of the Saxony-Anhalt vacation route "Romanesque Road". The almost 1000-year-old architectural beauty in the center of the city of Magdeburg still impresses its visitors. This includes the striking group of towers and the adjoining church, the picturesque cloister with the unique tonsure, the fascinating barrel vaults in the north wing, which the museum uses for various exhibitions and events, and many other details, such as the capitals in the cloister.

During the expansion of the fortifications, the defense towers "Hinter der Möllenvogtei" and "Kiek in die Köken" were built in 1430. A total of five defense towers were built during this period. It was not until 1525 that the construction of a solid city wall between the defense towers began. Both towers were restored in the course of the reconstruction of the Fürstenwall. A piece of medieval city could thus be preserved.
