This marvellous model right next to the famous Magdeburg Cathedral shows Magdeburg's old town. In the background you can see the building of the state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt and on the left edge of the picture the modern buildings in the direction of Breiter Weg. By focussing on the 3D model in the foreground, the more distant areas are blurred - an effect that gives photographs a special depth and elegance.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
Magdeburg Cathedral is the city's landmark. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil. Construction began in 1207.
