The old main post office is located on Breite Weg in the centre of Magdeburg (Saxony-Anhalt). It was built between 1895 and 1899 and served as the city's main post office for over 100 years. There was already a head post office on this site in 1839, but it was demolished at the end of the 19th century to make room for a more prestigious main post office building. The current building was constructed in the historicist style, which was strongly orientated towards historical forms. Today, the building houses the Eike von Repgow Justice Centre and a post office.

Magdeburg Cathedral is located in the immediate vicinity. It is the city's landmark. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil. It is the burial place of the founder of the Holy Roman Empire, Otto the Great, and his first wife, Queen Editha, and is the most important religious building in the eastern German states.

Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. The Gothic cathedral of Magdeburg is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
