The Maasvlakte, also called First Maasvlakte to distinguish it from the later constructed Second Maasvlakte, is a large industrial area built in the Maas estuary. Located directly on the North Sea, the plain is part of the Port of Rotterdam and belongs to the municipality of Rotterdam. However, the city of Rotterdam lies 40 kilometres inland.
On the Maasvlakte, you will find Europe's largest container cluster. You will also find large-scale bulk transhipment companies (oil, gas and coal). The Maasvlakte has an open connection to the North Sea. Maasvlakte 2 is Rotterdam's newest port and industrial area. Our ambition is to make this the most sustainable and innovative port area in the world. This is where, for example, Europe's largest hydrogen hub will be located.
