This is an insane sight and it is a shame that a picture does not have a sound on it, because you have to hear this!
This Tornado lives up to its name, as it makes 'nice and loud'noise on both landing and take-off.
Besides, it is a comparatively large (and unwieldy) aircraft, especially if you compare it to an F-16 over an F-35.
I was able to take this picture just before it started to get dark at the aforementioned airbase near Cologne.
The fact that the lights are on has nothing to do with this, it in a standard procedure that aircraft landing have their lights on. The nice thing is that the plane really does pass right in front of you and you can take pictures's right here in the landing. Hearing protection highly desirable, as you will understand.
For the fans among us: the Tornado in the picture is the 44-74 of 33rd squadron, which actually has its home base at Büchel but has temporarily moved to Nörvenich.
The Luftwaffe expects to keep the Tornado in service until around 2030 and then its service is really over!
