Louis Hartlooper Complex

by Domstad Rudie

The digital artwork depicts the Louis Hartlooper Complex on the first day of the coronavirus pandemic lockdown, captured in a moment of unexpected silence. The cinema’s distinctive façade appears stately and unperturbed, but the empty terraces and folded-up parasols betray a sudden standstill. No visitors, no buzz of activity — just a desolate atmosphere made palpable by the absence of human life. On the left-hand side of the image, a young woman with a pram hurries towards the edge of the frame. A small arm protrudes from the pram, a subtle sign of hope and the future amidst the desolation. Above this scene, a clear blue, cloudless sky stretches out, an unmistakably summery backdrop that contrasts with the two bare trees silhouetted sharply against the sky. Their bare branches evoke a sense of winter, emptiness and transience, as if the seasons and emotions were intertwined. Large banners display the announcements for the films *House of Gucci* and *Annette*, titles that now await an audience that will not be coming any time soon. The question arises as to how long this silence will last, and whether the magic of film will ever bring people together in this space again. The artwork balances between stillness and anticipation, capturing a unique moment in time in which culture, society and the individual stand still, yet also yearn for a revival.
