About the artwork

Another photo from the legendary quiver tree forest in Namibia - and an evening I will never forget. I had moved away from our photo group during the golden hour because I was fascinated by a particularly expressive quiver tree in the distance. Its striking growth, the branching silhouettes and the way the light broke through its branches - I just had to take a closer look.

As I photographed it, the landscape around me changed. The warm rocks glowed in the last of the sunlight, crickets chirped and a jackal howled in the distance. The sun sank quickly, the shadows grew longer and suddenly I realised that I had lost my bearings. No mobile phone reception, no human traces - just sand, stones and the archaic silence of Africa.

I felt a mixture of awe, fascination and a growing sense of unease. The idea of being stranded in the wilderness in the dark was frightening. But then I discovered our photo guide on a hill - what a relief.

This photo epitomises that moment: the magic of the wilderness, the silence, the light and experiencing your own limits. Ideal as a large-format print in landscape format - for anyone who loves wanderlust and wants to be touched by real nature.
