For work, I got to go to Los Angeles again. A city I have visited many times now, but where I always try to make some time to go out with my camera. It comes along with my tripod as standard, as photography is and remains my passion.
This time I had a few days to spare and decided to capture the city itself. Los Angeles is not all palm trees and busy boulevards, but also offers impressive contrasts. From a higher vantage point, I had a view of the skyline, with the snow-capped peaks of the San Gabriel Mountains beyond. A surreal image: the warm glow of the sun on the buildings, while the mountains in the distance still look wintry.
I deliberately chose the moment around sunset. The light is soft then and the colors are a bit warmer. With my tripod firmly positioned, I could work in peace. The image I ended up with was shot with a zoom lens, so the landscape is visually more pulled together. The compression of perspective brings the Los Angeles skyline and the snow-capped mountains in the background closer together, creating a powerful and layered image. This technique gives it a more compact look, while maintaining depth and scale.
At home, the second part of the process began: selecting and editing the images to make them suitable for my shop at Werk aan de Muur. This takes time and attention, but when the end result matches what I was feeling at the time, I know it's right.
A piece of Los Angeles, captured in a moment of peace and beauty. Maybe it will bring some Californian flair to your wall too.
