Loosdrecht is a village in the municipality of Wijdemeren, in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland. Loosdrecht consists of two parts, namely Oud-Loosdrecht (approximately 2,055 inhabitants) and the larger Nieuw-Loosdrecht (approximately 6,525 inhabitants).
Loosdrecht is mainly known as a water sports village west of Hilversum with interconnected recreational lakes: the Loosdrechtse Plassen. These were created in the 16th century from peatland by peat extraction. The number of puddles counted as Loosdrechtse Plassen (Loosdrecht lakes) depends on the definition used, but there are at least five.
Loosdrecht was originally also a municipality. During the municipal reorganisation of 2002, the Utrecht municipality of Loosdrecht was merged with the Noord-Holland municipalities of Nederhorst den Berg and 's-Graveland to form Wijdemeren. Loosdrecht was transferred to the province of North Holland.
