Along the North Sea coast there is a lot of turning off of the beach and dunes. Attempts are being made in many places to counteract this by supplying new sand (the so-called sand suppletion), but this does not happen everywhere. In a number of places, stone dams have been built in the sea to counteract the turn-off. This is also the case at the northern tip of Texel. In 1995, a long dam of 550 metres was placed in the sea. The result is an enormously wide beach. The beach is regularly used for kite flying and buggy-surfing: you let yourself be pulled by a large kite while sitting on a small cart. High speeds are achieved. At very high tide, part of the created beach is sometimes flooded.
