About "Lockheed F-104 Starfighter"

About the artwork

Several aircraft are on display at the National Military Museum during the Summer Offensive in Soesterberg. They are in a pretty spot with the heathland in the background.
Here you can see the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter in the light of the setting sun.

The Starfighter was one of the most famous supersonic single-engine US fighter aircraft of the 20th century. The aircraft was designed by Lockheed and was operational with the USAF from 1958-1967, during the Cold War.
The aircraft was predominantly used as a fighter-bomber, but there were also versions modified for a fighter role. The F-104 was used by the US in combat operations during the Vietnam War, among others. To achieve the desired performance, Lockheed adopted the minimalist approach: a design that relied on the lightest, most aerodynamic design around a powerful engine. The rocket on wheels was a reality. The emphasis was on reducing drag and mass.

Placement in a Starfighter squadron meant the pilot was among the better of the air force involved, as the aircraft did not forgive mistakes. It was the first aircraft that could fly Mach 2 for long periods, its speed and climbing ability still capturing the imagination today.
