About "Little Owl"

by Patrick Scholten

About the artwork

The Little Owl is the smallest among our owls. It is recognisable by its small size (22 cm) and plump stature. The bright lemon-yellow eyes with the dark pupil and the flattened head give it a bright and severe appearance. The plumage is brown above with a few white spots on the head. The underside is light coloured with dark spots. The tail is brown with several white transverse bands. The wing span is 55-60 cm. The weight of the male averages 180 grams and that of the female 200 grams. The Little Owl is much less of a nocturnal bird than other owls. During the day, it is often sunbathing and by evening, when it is still light, it is already hunting. When excited, the owl lets out a barking "kjè - kjè - kjè - kjè - kjè ". Its flight is undulating like that of a woodpecker. Also notable are its short tail and rounded wings. Sits a lot on poles and roofs and hops and bends at danger. It can also be seen just sitting during the day. The Little Owl is a bird of the semi-open agricultural landscape with wooded banks and short vegetation. Park-like landscapes and old standard fruit trees are also very suitable for the Little Owl. But it can also occur near farms, at the edge of villages and along country roads, as long as there are quiet corners, such as old barns and hollow trees.
