About ‘Le port de Rotterdam’

Le port de Rotterdam (also known as 'The port of Rotterdam') is a painting by Paul Signac. Painted in 1907 after a stay in the Netherlands, Le port de Rotterdam shows a view of the port of Rotterdam, viewed by Signac from his hotel room. It shows a swarm of ships, plumes of smoke and dolphins in the swaying water, with the imposing Maas bridges in the background. In keeping with the divisionist style, the painting is composed of small, mosaic-like touches of paint. These dots of unmixed paint have been placed side by side on the canvas, so that they optically blend together only in the eye of the viewer. The individual touches of colour, almost cubes, give a shimmering effect and create a composition where the individual elements seem to merge synthetically into the overall picture. From a distance, the whole creates a dynamic impression of movement. The painting is in the collection of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
