About "Koningshaven bridge (De Hef) Rotterdam"

by Lydia Hoogland

About the artwork

As the evening colours itself in soft pink and deep purple, De Hef takes on an almost dreamlike appearance. The bridge's industrial lines stand out sharply against the sky, but at the same time there seems to be a soft glow over it - as if the past is briefly highlighted in the present.

De Hef is the popular name of the Koningshavenbrug, a railway lift bridge over Rotterdam's Koningshaven, opened in 1927 and decommissioned for rail traffic since 24 September 1993. It once formed an important link as part of the Breda-Rotterdam railway line. Now it stands idle, but never without significance.

In the evening light, this historic bridge takes on a new voice. The water reflects the colours of the sky, the city seems to become silent for a moment, and the contours of De Hef form a poetic reminder of craftsmanship, movement and time. The bridge breathes history, but also tranquillity - a monument that no longer needs to carry, but is only allowed to be.

This work on the wall captures exactly that moment when the past and the now briefly touch. An ode to Rotterdam, in colour, in silence, and in pride.
