The kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) is a water-loving bird in the family kingfishers (Alcedinidae). It is a striking appearance due to its contrasting blue and orange colours, but also a very shy species that is rarely seen. Alcedo atthis is the only kingfisher species found as far north as Europe including the Netherlands and Belgium, at least the subspecies Alcedo atthis ispida. Most kingfishers live in the tropics[source?] The kingfisher is a typical fish-eater (piscivore), so strongly water-bound. Its preference is for flowing waters. In most of its range, the species is common, but in some areas the kingfisher is threatened with extinction.
