This most famous South Holland mill complex dates back to the years 1738-1740. Nineteen mills were then built near the village of Kinderdijk to discharge water from Alblasserwaard polders into the river Lek. This drains the water to the North Sea. A unique feature of the complex is that so many mills still stand together in a relatively small area. Moreover, they are part of a characteristic Dutch polder landscape.
Since 1998, they have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
