"Juvenile Yellowtail Damselfish Silhouette, Bonaire" photograph was taken at the The Cliff dive site in Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands. The juvenile phase of the Yellowtail Damselfish has some of the most beautiful color patterns on the reef. They are a favorite of divers and snorkelers. The nickname "Jewelfish" is well earned. They are incredibly difficult to photograph because they are constantly darting in and out of crevices and coral heads. When you do get the shot, their bright blue polka dot pattern and dark blue body is so striking that the other details often get washed out against the reef. The result is a photo that looks like a ball of tiny lights. I wanted to do better for this popular fish. The challenge was finding the right location and setting up my camera and lighting to capture every detail. This was not easy. The result was this photo. A beautiful dark blue fish on a black background where all of the amazing colors and details can be appreciated. It can be done!
