About the artwork

Lavery captured the bright interior and lofty proportions of the Dutch House while some visitors to the Glasgow International exhibition enjoyed a hot drink. The house, built by leading cocoa producers Van Hoeten and Son, of Weesp near Amsterdam , stood near the exhibition's grand entrance. The exhibition, which celebrated Glasgow's industrial, commercial and cultural status, was to fund the new art gallery and museum in Kelvingrove park and a new art school. Lavery became the exhibition's informal artist-in-residence and produced more than 50 oil paintings with various themes'which culminated in a civic commission to record Queen Victoria's visit.

Lavery's masterful use of light and shadow, as well as his attention to detail, bring the figures and surroundings to life. The composition exudes a sense of cosiness and elegance, befitting the cultural and commercial status of the exhibition.

John Lavery (Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom 2 March 1856 - Kilkenny, Ireland, 10 January 1941) was an Irish painter, best known for his aestheticist portraits.
