Museum Island welcomes the world
In view of the large number of visitors to Museum Island, the James-Simon-Galerie is of central importance for the infrastructure of the museum complex. As the new entrance building, it offers visitors orientation, information and hospitality. It assumes central service functions for the Museum Island and thus relieves the historic exhibition centres.
Architect David Chipperfield's design of the new building is based on the historical motif of Stüler's colonnades. The sixth building on the Museum Island thus blends harmoniously into the historical ensemble and at the same time sets a contemporary accent on the Museum Island. The patron of the new entrance building, James Simon, is one of the most important patrons in the history of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. His commitment to art and science is also a shining example for modern patronage. The foundation stone for the James-Simon-Galerie was laid in autumn 2013. The topping-out ceremony took place in April 2016 and the keys were handed over in December 2018. The building opened in July 2019.
