About the artwork

Adonis is a figure from Greek and Phoenician mythology. The name of this deity comes simply from the Phoenician Adon, meaning "lord. Like the Phoenician Adon, Adonis referred to the goddess's lover, an annual dying and resurrecting god. Adonis was the lover of Aphrodite or Venus. Venus, the Roman goddess of love, originally an Old Italian vegetation goddess, protector of gardens and vineyards.

The couple is nude in this portrait where the woman's hips, belly and breasts are shown on the nude portrait and the man's legs and torso.

All in all, a sexy and sensual erotic picture with romance.

Jacob van Loo (Sluis, 1614 - Paris, Nov. 26, 1670) was a Dutch painter of history and genre paintings, and portraits. He popularized a particular genre: a concert on a balcony or terrace. Van Loo worked with a subtle color palette. an Loo was born in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. His father is said to have been a notary but he is usually considered the son of the painter Jan van Loo, who trained him.

After he moved to Amsterdam; there contemporaries such as Rembrandt, Ferdinand Bol and Bartholomeus van der Helst worked and earned considerable sums of money portraying Amsterdam's elite. In 1643, he married a sister of The Hague painter Martinus Lengele (-1668); the couple had six children. Jacob van Loo lived on Rozengracht, in the Jordaan at the time.
