About the artwork

"A winter scene" by Isaac van Ostade, painted in the 1640s, shows a lively winter landscape. The foreground shows a frozen river or pond on which people perform various activities, such as skating and gathering wood. A horse is pulling a sledge with a man and some barrels on it. In the left foreground, people are repairing a skate or checking the ice.

The background of the painting is filled with snow-covered houses and bare trees, depicting a typical winter scene of the Dutch 17th century. The scenes in the background show more people engaged in everyday activities, such as carrying loads and tending animals.

Isaac van Ostade's use of detailed brushstrokes and vibrant colours brings the winter setting to life and provides an insight into daily life of the time. This painting is a wonderful example of his skill in capturing the atmosphere and activities of a winter day.

Isaac Jansz. van Ostade (baptised Haarlem, 2 June 1621 - buried there, 16 October 1649) was a Dutch painter and draughtsman belonging to the Dutch School. As a painter, he was active in Haarlem from 1629. In 1643, he was admitted to the Haarlem Guild of St Luke. About'100 paintings by Van Ostade are known, including mainly genre pieces, landscapes and portraits.
