About "Iguana"

by Jose Lok

About the artwork

The iguana is perfectly adapted to its habitat, it has sharp and powerful claws which allow it to climb well and beautiful green color which provides camouflage. The difference between a male and female iguana is not only the length, but also the size of the throat lobe and the spiny scales on the back of the green iguana. These scales are much larger on the male than on the female. The wattles and scales on the cheek are characteristic of this large lizard. It can grow up to two meters long and can be found in the Antilles, Mexico, Central America and South America to Southern Brazil and Paraguay. It likes wet areas: coastal areas, banks of streams and rivers and the tropical rainforest. It lives alone or in groups. It feeds on leaves, flowers, and fruits, but also on insects and carrion. Green iguanas communicate with their conspecifics through body language, especially through head movements. A female usually lays about 40 eggs that hatch in 64 to 84 days. In Central America, this lizard is called a tree chicken. Because of its tasty meat, it is often eaten.
