The ship was built in 1967 as the last ship of the "Nikitich"-class, an identical series with 21 units, at the Leningrad Admiral Shipyard and named after the Warnemünde pilot commander Stephan Jantzen (1827-1913).
After the icebreaker was commissioned in 1968, it was handed over to VEB Bagger-, Bugsier- und Bergungsreederei Rostock for management (maintenance).
The primary tasks included:
- keeping the harbors and ferry ports free of ice in order to secure the handling of goods
- keeping the approaches to the naval bases free of ice
- feeding electric power to the degaussing loops for degaussing military and merchant ships.
In 2005, the STEPHAN JANTZEN was taken out of active service.
