In a grey notebook from an equally grey past, I made a note - with a bit of goodwill, you could call it a little poem:
"I was asleep. I only woke up when you walked away."
A truism.
Not that I was really asleep.
Closing your eyes doesn't necessarily mean sleeping.
Closer to the truth is this:
I closed my eyes to you.
I didn't see you standing there.
Lived my own life.
Searched for it in what amused me most.
I didn't see that you were - literally - on the sidelines.
I didn't care then either.
That you were lonely passed me by.
I never noticed the tears in your eyes.
That empty look... I only saw it much later.
And then suddenly, out of nowhere,
I wake up sweating.
A recurring nightmare.
An image that is no longer reversible:
"I was asleep. I only woke up when you walked away."
