Hyacinth with a shallow depth of field against a black background by Acharya Fotografie

Up close, the flower loses its familiar shape. The hyacinth no longer appears as a plant, but as a dense interweaving of blossoms, lines and intertwining forms. Delicate pinks, violets and darker shades recur, overlapping one another and drawing the eye to wander between the individual flowers.

What appears from a distance to be a compact cluster of flowers reveals, up close, a remarkable individuality. No two flowers are exactly alike. Some open up to the light, whilst others remain hidden or are already fading back into the blur.

It is precisely this shallow depth of field that alters our perception. Only a fraction of the blossoms are clearly visible, whilst the rest gradually dissolve in colour and form. The eye cannot take everything in at once – it must make a choice.

Perhaps this resembles our perception more than we realise. In nature, too, we often see the whole picture first: a tree, a meadow, a flower. Only when we step closer does this seemingly unambiguous image begin to dissolve. One form becomes many. One colour gives rise to countless nuances. And something familiar suddenly becomes something that can be rediscovered.

Photography does not alter the subject itself. It alters the distance.
