About ‘Hotel in Kotor’ by Rene van Heerdt

We slept outside Kotor, away from the hustle and bustle and the walls of the old town. That gave peace of mind, but the moment that stayed with me the most took place right inside Kotor. Early in the morning, before the city really woke up, I walked alone through the centre and ended up at a small hotel tucked away in a side street.

The hotel had a modest terrace, hardly more than a few tables and chairs on the stone street. Everything was quiet. No guests, no staff, no sounds except my own footsteps and the soft murmur of the city still sleeping. The chairs stood there untouched, as if the evening had never ended and the morning had gently slipped between them.

The light was just right. Soft, low, with long shadows sliding across the facades. The walls showed their texture, the colours grew warmer without being harsh. This was Kotor without haste, without role play. No hotel, no city, no scenery. Only space, light and time.

I stood for a while and took photos, but mostly I watched. You can't plan moments like this. They happen when you get up early and expect nothing. That little hotel terrace thus became a symbol of Kotor itself. A city that fully reveals itself only in silence.

Later that day, the terrace would be full. But this image, this tranquillity, I took with me. This was the real luxury.
