September holiday 2023,
A lake full of hippos.
The hippo has a large, round body, short legs and a large head with a broad snout. The tail is short and thick. They have no fur, just a few bristles on the tail and face. The soft, shiny skin is purple-grey or bluish-black. The underside, ears and mouth are more brownish pink. The skin contains glands that secrete a viscous substance that turns a red colour on the surface due to polymerisation.[3] This secretion serves as sunscreen, disinfectant and perfume, among other things. The eyes, ears and nostrils are placed high on the head, keeping them above water while the rest of the body is submerged. The incisors are very large and serve mainly for fighting. In males, the canine and incisor teeth are larger than in females. The teeth can reach a length of up to 50 cm. The teeth stay sharp because the teeth of the lower jaw and upper jaw rub against each other.
The hippo has a head-rump length of 280 to 350 centimetres and a shoulder height of 130 to 165 centimetres. The tail is 35 to 50 centimetres long. Males are larger than females. Females generally weigh 510 to 2,500 kilograms, males 650 to 3,200. Males usually continue to grow throughout their lives.
Dear reader,
A friend asked me a few years ago: will you join a photography course. I never expected to enjoy it so much. So I would like to share with you my photos that I think have the "wow" factor.
Greetings Monique
