On a self-drive safari in Senegal, we came across this Hippo. Calm as he was, he floated through the water, sometimes flapping his ears causing the water to splash up, and sometimes exhaling causing big clouds of water droplets to fall over his head like confetti.
Witnessing a beast so big and mighty, just a few metres away, is a feeling almost beyond description. You feel humble and small, vulnerable and honoured. The big hippo allows you to be in its territory and that is quite an achievement in itself.
I am glad that seeing this hippopotamus allowed me to get to eye level to take this picture. I hope you can enjoy it as endlessly as I did.
