This beautifully coloured Hawfinch male was captured in the vicinity of Nijverdal. It is a special bird with a proportionally large beak. The name apple chaffinch is curious because apple finches hardly eat apples. It is suspected that the word apple refers to the fruits of the hawthorn which are also called hawthorn apples, because in English, the apple finch is called Hawfinch, where Haw refers to the berry of the hawthorn.
