A harbour light is a beacon which marks the entrance to a port for shipping. This beacon is a light stand and is placed on both sides of the harbour entrance so that ships can enter the harbour safely. Many ports have a pier in the form of a stone dam or palisade on which the harbour lights are placed at the end. The harbour lights consist of a pole or a scaffold with the lamp mounted on it. Sometimes a lighthouse is built on that spot.
