About ‘Handing over a letter in an outhouse, Pieter de Hooch’
Handing a letter in a front house, Pieter de Hooch, 1670 oil on canvas, h 68cm × w 59cm. More object details The front part of an Amsterdam canal house. All the windows and doors are wide open. Daylight falls on a young woman who has just received a letter. Pieter de Hooch cleverly connected the world inside with that outside: we follow the dog up the canal, where on the other side some men stand and a woman meets our gaze at the window. To the right, you can see further away through a gate.
