The Adriaan was opened on May 19, 1779. The windmill is located on the Spaarne River, at the time on the outskirts of the city. The mill was built on the existing foundations of the former Goe Vrouwtoren (Goe Woman's Tower). The Goe Vrouwtoren was part of the old fortification around Haarlem. Because the mill was built on top of the tower's foundation, it stood high and thus caught a lot of wind.
