This image depicts Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, in a rare form in which she holds a peach of immortality and a branch with green leaves. These attributes symbolise long life, health and healing power. The peach is an ancient Chinese symbol of immortality, while the branch refers to growth, renewal and force of nature.
Guanyin's countenance radiates calm and serenity, her eyes half-closed in meditative softness. The jewellery, golden body and colourful robes with lotus flowers emphasise her status as a divine benefactress. The small Buddha in her crown refers again to Amitabha, the source of her enlightenment.
In Java, where this statue was photographed, Guanyin is deeply rooted in both Chinese and local religious traditions. She is revered as protector of health, fertility and inner peace. Believers bring her offerings of fruit, flowers and incense, hoping for harmony in body and mind.
Guanyin with peach and branch embodies the life force and compassion that permeates everything - a gentle reminder of the healing power of compassion in everyday life.
