The ducal house Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf (or Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp), from 1720 only Holstein-Gottorf, was a collateral line of the house of Oldenburg. It was named after Gottorf Castle near Schleswig, the ancestral seat of the family.
From 1544 until the beginning of the 18th century, the Gottorf dukes ruled the territorially scattered partial duchy of the same name in Schleswig and Holstein, from 1713 to 1773 only in Holstein. Between 1751 and 1818 the House of Gottorf gave birth to four Swedish kings, since 1762 to the Russian tsars and since 1773 to the dukes and later grand dukes of Oldenburg.
Gottorf Castle (German: Schloss Gottorf, Low German and Danish: Gottorp) is a castle and estate in the city of Schleswig, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. It is the ancestral home of the Holstein-Gottorp branch of the House of Oldenburg. It is situated on an island in the Schlei, about 40 km from the Baltic Sea.
