Grand Teton National Park is located in western Wyoming south of Yellowstone National Park. It takes its name from the Teton chain that runs through the park in a north-south direction. To the east of the mountains is the vast plain called Jackson Hole and the large mountain lake Jackson Lake, as well as the smaller lakes Leigh Lake and Jenny Lake.

The region has been inhabited for at least 11,000 years, when nomadic Paleo-Indians began to spend the warmer summer months there. John Colter is believed to have been the first white man to set eyes on the area around 1808. The name of the mountains comes from the French word for breast and refers to their shape. The area was declared a national park on February 26, 1929.

Grand Teton National Park is a United States National Park in northwestern Wyoming. At approximately 310,000 acres (130,000 ha), the park includes the major peaks of the 40-mile-long (64 km) Teton Range as well as most of the northern sections of the valley known as Jackson Hole. It is only 10 miles (16 km) south of Yellowstone National Park, to which it is connected by the National Park Service-managed John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Along with surrounding National Forests, these three protected areas constitute the almost 18,000,000-acre (7,300,000 ha) Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the largest intact mid-latitude temperate ecosystems in the world.
