Geese are large, heavily built waterfowl in the family Anatidae.
Geese specialise in grazing and live more on land than other Anatidae. To do so, they have strong, rather long legs, which are placed in the middle below the body. This allows them to walk well.
Geese can live up to 30 years.
Geese are monogamous: couples stay together throughout their lives. The nest is on the ground. Females cover it with down, which they pluck from their own breast. The young are nest-birds and thus leave the nest soon after hatching. The parents still keep them warm and guard them. However, they look for food on their own.
Geese are very watchful and can flap their wings in anger. When approaching danger, geese will yelp loudly. For this reason, geese used to be kept as watchful birds.
