Cervids (Cervidae) are a family of ruminant, even-toed mammals characterised by the antlers of the male deer. A male deer is called stag or buck and a female deer is called doe. With roe deer, however, one usually speaks of buck and goat, and with reindeer and elk of bull and cow. There are some 40 species in 16 genera and four under families.
Males, and in the reindeer also females, wear antlers that they shed annually, probably to save energy in food-poor seasons. A new antler usually becomes larger and more complex than the previous one. The size and complexity of antlers show the health and age of the males, thus ensuring dominance.
